ABOUT OUR CIVITAN CLUB & CIVITAN INTERNATIONAL
Civitan is an association of community service clubs. The Civitan Club of Idaho Falls has been around for over 60 years!
Civitan was founded in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1917. Its founder and first president was Dr. Courtney W. Shropshire, a prominent Birmingham physician.
Civitan's purpose is to provide opportunities for personal and professional development while improving communities through community service.
The mission of Civitan worldwide is to provide a volunteer association of clubs to identify and meet community needs with an emphasis on helping people with mental and developmental disabilities.
Civitan's motto is "Builders of Good Citizenship."
The Civitan World Headquarters is located in Birmingham, Alabama, and provides support services to clubs in the areas of growth and expansion, leadership training, public relations, and fund raising.
There are approximately 32,000 members in nearly 1,200 clubs throughout the world.
Junior Civitan, a program for young people, has approximately 17,000 members in nearly 500 clubs. We sponsored the Shining Stars Civitan Club in Idaho Falls in 2018.
The emphasis of the organization is toward helping people with developmental disabilities. However, Civitan clubs are involved in a variety of community service and fund-raising projects.
Our most well-known projects include Alive After 5, Civitan Park, Pub Golf Tournament and our involvement with Festival of Trees, Civitan Plaza, Partnering for Play with the City of Idaho Falls, Camp Hayden, Development Workshop, and Shop with a Cop.
Civitan funds the Civitan International Research Center, a facility for research and treatment of developmental disabilities located at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
